My laptop
Here is my new main laptop:
It’s Libreboot Thinkpad x200 with 8GB Ram and SSD, and I think the only better laptop you can buy in 2019 is the same 10 years old model but with IPS screen.
I had been working with numerous laptops starting from my mom’s old Toshiba on Windows 95, to a chroot’ed Google Pixel Chromebook. I had a Panasonic toughbook(and it was good, but heavy). I was touching contemporary Apple laptops and Windows laptops from Dell. The thing I yet to try are Librem laptops from Purism, though I respect the work they are doing, I think its difficult to surpass the build quality of the old Thnikpads. I will not rant how laptop manufactures today are bad and how they should respect their customers more, instead I will just name the advantages of this model and why I don’t feel that I’m being owned when I’m using it.
-
Durability. The thing is built to last. It has interchangeable battery, and speaking about the battery, if you plugged the cord and your battery is discharged this laptop boots immediately after you turn it on. Yeah it does not ask you to wait 15 minutes to charge the battery. Incredible new technologies!
-
Libreboot and Linux compatibility, 100% Freedom. Read about Intel ME. On my laptop this thing is disabled. As a bonus with SSD and without bloated firmware the booting time is instantaneous.
-
Its lightweight. Its not super-ultra-mega thin, its just thin and light. I use it to be mobile and to write code, not to slice carrots.
-
Connectivity and dock station. The dock station is incredibly convenient. Its smooth I don’t have any headache and don’t need to buy dongles.
-
The keyboard. My fingers thank me. Really, is everyone liking to pound on a flat hard surface these days?
It has enough CPU to satisfy my basic needs - writing code in vim and visiting essential websites. Its my terminal which empowers me and gives joy.
